Is Double Glazing As Good As it Seems?
It has been well advertised that double glazing can make your home more energy efficient and save you money on your gas and electricity bills. And as the cost of gas and electricity continues to rise and we become more concerned about the damage we are causing to the environment by burning fossil fuels we investigate to see if the advertisements are true and we should be investing in double glazing.
The latest figures from the energy saving trust have revealed that almost half of the UK’s carbon emissions are coming from the energy we use in our homes on a daily basis. By reducing the amount of energy we use will not only help to protect the environment in the long term it can also save you a considerable amount on your monthly gas and electricity bills now.
Interestingly due to the fact that the average house is constructed using 8 square meters of glass up to 20% of the heat generated in a home is lost through the windows. However by installing energy efficient double glazing windows the amount of heat lost through your windows is reduced dramatically.
Research based on an average semi detached house has shown that if you live in a house which is single glazed by installing energy efficient double glazing windows you can reduce the amount of energy you use by 0.30 tonnes or 18% a year. Based on a total window area of 12.51m this could save you over £500 a year on your energy bills.
As the research show installing energy efficient double glazing could save you a considerable amount of money and although the initial outlay may be considerable in the long run they will more than pay for themselves.
